Types of fiction

Before we look into the type of short fiction , it is important to define what we mean by fiction

The term is sometimes used to refer to narrative texts , be they written in verse or prose.

In general, when we use the term fiction today we use it in almost exclusively in connection with prose works, not in connection with verse .

Fiction is essentially a narrative told in prose.

Fiction , unlike history and other social science , is art

For sake of clarity, we shall divide short fiction into types or kinds.

The Parable

It is a very short narrative , usually not more than a paragraph , based on an analogy between the actual details of the story it tells and the implicit lesson it aims to illustrate .
The incidents in the parable are not important in themselves; their importance spring , rather, from the theme or idea they aim to illustrate .
Parables in this sense are very similar to proverbs and famous saying , you cite them in order to sport a point you wish to convey.

The Fable

It is a short story , usually longer than a parable , which aims to exemplify a moral lesson , often stated explicitly at the end . The most famous fables throughout world literature , and English and American as well , are the beast fables.
These are stories in which the major characters are animals which talk and act like human beings.

The Tale

It is also a short story. The emphasis in it , however, is either on the events themselves or on the revelation of an aspect of character.
In the tale, there is an obvious concern with telling a story more than introducing setting, characters , and events and letting them interact to produce the overall effects.

The tale is less elaborate and complex in structure , style , characterization , and theme than the short story , even though it may be longer , and it is less symbolic , allegorical and moralistic than the fable .

The short story

The short story is more intricate and complex than the parable , the fable , and the tale , but it is less so than the novel .
Its plot is more fully developed than the other shorter forms of the story , but simpler than that of the novel.
There is ample room in the short story for a somewhat detailed presentation of setting , character , complication , analysis , point of view and event; but such room is less ample than the room available in the novel.
The short story is more modern and advanced as an art form , and more popular today than the parable , the fable or the tale .
It is less explicitly , didactic, less moralistic , and more interesting in its presentation of point of view.
Its narrative technique is also more creative and subtle.

The short novel(novella)

It is often called the novelette or the short novel . Defined simply, the novella lies in its complexity or simplicity of setting , characterization, plot , event, conflict, and complication exactly in the middle between the short story and the novel.
The novella shares all the aspects of the short story and the novel but differs in magnitude: it is more elaborate and complex than the short story , and less so than the novel.
The novella is also a well-known and a very popular modern form
